Niall Horan has donated a whopping 100,000 euro (£87,000) to an Irish charity which helps older people through the coronavirus pandemic.

The One Direction star, 26, gifted the generous amount to the charity Alone, with the organisation stating that the donation enables them to continue to provide vital assistance to older people during this difficult time.

The Slow Hands hitmaker has said that ‘It’s a real pleasure’ to show his support to such a ‘great cause’.

In a statement he said: ‘Through interactions with the Irish government and HSE about critical and immediate support that Ireland needed, I found out that Alone was a charity doing fantastic work looking after older people all over the country.

‘With greater support, they will be able to reach so many more, always a priority but especially during this unprecedented crisis.

In the wake of the pandemic, the charity’s additional resources have been put towards Covid-19 activities, while all fundraising events have been cancelled or postponed.

However, Alone insists that the singer’s donation will help to ensure its services have the financial support they need to continue and develop further in the future.

Sean Moynihan, chief executive of Alone, said of Niall’s donation: ‘We are so grateful to Niall for his amazing donation which will make a huge difference to Alone and the older people we support, and we would like to thank him for his wonderful generosity.

‘Our message throughout this period to every older person has been “you are not alone”.’

He continued: ‘We would like to thank Niall for helping us to continue to make this a reality and support older people across Ireland.

‘At the moment we are putting huge resources into keeping the national Covid-19 phone line for older people operating and ensuring that older people have the emotional and practical supports they need to get through this crisis.

‘We want to ensure that the support we provide, which has proven so vital over the last few weeks, can continue after the crisis is over. It is supporters like Niall that help to make this happen.’

Alone, which at its peak receives more than 1,110 calls a day, continues to encourage older people who need advice or support to call its support line, 0818 222 024 from 8am-8pm, seven days a week.

The support line, which is running in collaboration with the Department of Health, the HSE, and local authorities, is available to all older people.

Niall’s good deed comes just days after his One Direction band mate Liam Payne confirmed he was ‘speaking’ to them again ahead of their 10-year anniversary this year.

The singer, 26, teased that he ‘couldn’t give too much away’ as he spoke to James Corden in home version of the Late Late Show.

Liam did little to quash rumours the band would be reforming to celebrate the milestone, following reports that they would be returning with new music.

The Strip That Down hitmaker, told James: ‘I’m not allowed to say too much obviously because I would be giving it away.’

‘We’ve been speaking a lot more at the moment, I think we are all feeling that that ten year…it’s a very special moment.’

Liam suggested that so far he has only spoken to Louis Tomlinson and Niall on FaceTime recently, while he didn’t mention Harry Styles and Zayn Malik.
